Over the River, and Through the Woods to Grandmother's House We Go....

I love thinking back on the many times our family drove to Grandma M's house. I remember driving quite far to get to her little town, then looking out the car window as we passed all the old houses. Grandpa J lives down that street. Aunt Rosemary lives there. Further on we round the corner where Cousin Richard got hit by the car, but was okay. I can still imagine I'm riding down the long back country road with black berry bushes and wild apple trees here and there. Over the bridge now; the barking dogs, from the house that sits near the river, run so close to our car. If I was brave enough to open the window, I could touch them. Then turning onto the long, bumpy, salmon berry and redcap lined road that led twisting and turning to Grandma's house where lots of uncles, aunts and cousins would be waiting and arriving. We drove that road so many times I can almost drive up it in my mind and remember every detail. I remember it's many turns, the small roads that turn off and go somewhere else on the mountain, the low rock that was left embedded deep in the ground that we had to drive around as we turned the corner near a small bank that was dug into to make the road a little more level , the huckleberry bushes that grew out of the stumps, the tall trees every where, the pump house off to the left as we got closer to Grandma's house, and the rope swing up the steep slope to the right as we pulled into Grandma's driveway. We spent good times with Grandma and our family there. We would sing while some of the uncle's and my dad would play the guitar. Kids would dance around in the middle of the room with lots of laughter and happy chatting from the aunts, Grandma and some uncles filling the house. Sometimes the uncles would make a run to the store and come back with lots of food for all of us to eat. If Grandma needed something fixed around the house every one would help or gather around the ones working and talk happily with each other. I remember when my dad and the uncles put in stepping stones for Grandma from her driveway to the house. It looked very nice and gave her a dry path to walk on when it was a rainy day. Sometimes we walked around the back of the house. The power lines made their buzzing sound, the grass was tall, and there was a large shed quite far away with hundreds of trees, bushes, wild blackberry patches, and the green underbrush I love so much stretching for miles. I remember for a while Grandma had a mule on the hill in front of the house, and that I was always just a little bit afraid that a wild animal might be lurking over a hill or in the bushes. After spending a fun filled day it would be time to go home. The uncles would always carry us kids to our car. I wonder if they remember doing that. It was such fun for us.
Tomorrow is Christmas, and we are planing a trip to my mom and dad's house. I hope my children enjoy visiting their grandparents as much as I did mine. I hope one day they will look back with fond memories and tell their children of the special times they spent at Grandma's house.

"Glory to God in the Highest"

It is difficult to think of Christ's birth without thinking of what we have made, and allowed, Christmas to become in our lives and in our hearts. I know a family who still celebrates the season with decorating their home with outdoor lights, a tree full of ornaments, watching good holiday movies, etc., but they open their presents earlier in December so their full focus on Christmas Eve and Day is on Jesus Christ, and what His glorious birth means to a sinful world.
I really enjoy the lights, decorations, shopping for and making gifts, making fudge, singing Christmas hymns and fun Christmas songs, sending cards to friends and family, and most of the other holiday activities, but I find the greatest JOY in knowing that Jesus Christ was born; that God Himself, in a human vessel, came down and lived among His creation (Isaiah 9:6) to lay down His life that we all, through Him, might be forgiven and  have eternal life (John 3:14-19). Isn't that the greatest gift anyone could ever give? The joy that this gift gives me is a lasting and fulfilling joy that I cannot contain nor keep silent. My cup truly runneth over. What a blessing!!  Beautiful grace!!
I pray that the JOY of the LORD fills your heart now and forever more.
Merry Christmas!

This Is My Fathers World

This is my Father's world,
and to my listening ears
all nature sings, and 'round me rings
the beauty of the spheres.
This is my Father's world:
I rest me in the thought
of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;
His hand the wonders wrought.

Hiking is a delight to my eyes as well as my soul. Whenever I am out in nature, I think of the Hand that made all things, and it brings a special joy to my heart. The One who created such magnificent beauty also created me, and is taking care of me. It is a comfort to know that He cares for me and loves me so much. Even though life has it's trials, I can rest and trust in Him to guide me and provide for me.

This is my Father's world,
the birds their carols raise,
the morning light, the lily white,
declare their maker's praise.
This is my Father's world,
He shines in all that's fair;
in the rustling grass I hear Him pass;
He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father's world.
O let me ne'er forget
that though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the ruler yet.
This is my Father's world:
why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is King; let the heavens ring!
God reigns; let the earth be glad!

Oh Happy Day!

Today is Presidents Day. No one had to work or be anywhere in the morning so we spent the time together. My children are all in their early twenties (21 in May, 22, 24 in April, and 25 in May).  I am blessed to have them living at home for a little while longer. We decided to spend our time together playing ping pong, and we looked forward to going out to lunch. We played two on two at first then the boys decided we should have a tournament. We each took our turn and had a wonderful time. The ball went under the car now and then, (we play in our garage) and Cordie, our little dog, learned very quickly how to go and get it for us. She went under the car, grabbed the ball in her mouth, brought it out and wanted to keep it each time. Such fun.  Even Justine played after being coaxed. She had so much fun she didn't want to quit.
It was such an enjoyable morning. We don't get to do things all together very much any more. I usually end up doing something one on one with them or I spend time with the girls then another time with the boys.
Anthony couldn't go to lunch with us; he had to go to work. Justine, Elizabeth, Sergio J. and I went out and enjoyed soup and salad and great conversation.
When Justine was younger, she used to have an Old Movie Night every Wednesday. We always enjoyed it. She had us pay a dollar for "dues" and then she used the money to buy ingredients to make treats. She just mentioned that she would like to have a "Bridge Night". Retro things are fascinating for her right now. I'm ready to play cards! It will be nice to spend more leisure time with my kids young adults.

The Wisdom in Vintage Books

The American Frugal Housewife.
Dedicated To Those Who Are Not Ashamed Of Economy.
By Mrs. Child
1833

The introductory chapter admonishes us to be very careful that "nothing be lost", and that the "true economy of housekeeping" includes the wise management of time as well as materials.
Repurposing old items is very popular right now. There are books and blogs about old items being remade into useful things such as  vintage pillowcases and sheets cut into 12" x 12" squares and made into beautiful quilts on Elegant Musings  http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/2012/02/a-quilting-question/. You can find lots of ideas on maya*made  http://mayamade.blogspot.com/search/label/Reinvention.
The American Frugal Housewife states "Nothing should be thrown away so long as it is possible to make any use of it, however trifling that use may be".
"Time is money." Every family member can have a part in the earning or saving of money. Hands could be busy at odd moments of time knitting, sewing, etc. and taking care of the things we do have so they stay in good repair and don't have to be replaced. We can begin early teaching our children to care for their own things, and help out in various ways to save money.
I am fascinated with old books and the wisdom from the past. I think we could all learn a lot by listening to the wise counsel penned in days gone by.

Every Day Is The Lord's Day

"Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was, and is, and is to come.
With all creation I sing: praise to the King of kings!
You are my everything, and I will adore you."
  (Chorus: Revelation Song)

We sang this song in church today. We got to the line "You are my everything", and I had to stop singing. I thought, do I really live like God is my everything? I say He is. I want Him to be, but my life doesn't always show that He is. Sometimes I am my everything. I forget to go to God with my decisions, I am upset if I am inconvenienced, I look out for my comfort, I want situations to turn out how I think they should. (I deceive myself with this last one. I say I am only trying to make a situation turn out God's way. I need to stop trying to control and let God work it out His way.) The list goes on and on. God should be my absolute everything, but sadly I don't let Him be.

I want to have some memory verses to dwell on when I foolishly glorify myself instead of trusting God; verses that bring my heart and mind back to truth and not deception.

 *       "But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand." (Isaiah 64:8)

 *      "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."(Proverbs 3:5-6)

 *     " LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart."(Psalm 15:1-2)

 *      "The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods. Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. (Psalm 24:1-5)

 *     "The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life." (Job 33:4)

What verses come to your mind.

Knitting My First Pair Of Socks

I am so excited. I am knitting my first pair of socks. I found a great book in the library with interesting history of hand knitted footwear, and many different sock patterns. It is called FOLK SOCKS by Nancy Bush. Her book is almost like having someone beside me showing me how to do each step. While following a sock pattern I can look up a picture of each stitch it calls for, and there is a section explaining each step in detail. I agree with the author of the book, "When you've knit the needed number of heel-flap rows, the fun really begins--it's time to turn the heel!" It is a lot of fun! I love to create needed items and I am content when my hands are occupied on a worthwhile endeavor.
